The Memorial of the Revolution in Timișoara is one of the oldest NGOs in the country, established in 1990. Since 2000, we have been a National Interest Ensemble național, awarded with The Order of Cultural Merit, Knight Rank in 2019
Our main purpose is to honor the memory of the heroes of 1989, to promote the culture of local remembrance in a European context through various educational initiatives, especially for the younger generation. We are a national documentation and research center with a database unique in Romania.
During our 36 years of activity, we have erected 14 monuments, established a publishing house through which we have published the results of our research in more than 70 volumes and in our scientific journal, which has reached its 37th issue. We have organized hundreds of cultural events, conferences, symposiums, workshops, and exhibitions.
If you visit us, you can explore our permanent exhibitions, such as “The Timișoara Revolution, 16–22 December 1989”, “The 1989 Revolution in the Martyr Cities”, “Timișoara 1990, the Revolution Continues”, “After 33 Years, Truth and Justice = Manipulation”, “Life under Communism”, “The Cold War Chronology”, as well as impressive temporary exhibitions, such as “‘89 from the Doorstep” – created by the visual artist Suzana Fântânariu, “The Hungarian Revolution of 1956” – an exhibition created by the Hungarian National Museum in Budapest, “Bucharest, 22 December 1989”, a photographic exhibition created by the war correspondent Jose Nicolas, the photographic exhibition “The War in Ukraine”, featuring photographs taken by the Ukrainian journalist Marianna Prysiazhniuk.
