The Timișoara Revolution Memorial offers our visitors an overview of important moments in the recent history of Europe and Romania.
Right at the entrance, visitors are greeted by a fragment of the Berlin Wall, placed in the courtyard of our institution to commemorate the crucial event of November 1989, which preceded the Romanian Revolution of December 1989.
Not far from the segment of the Berlin Wall is the work of Timișoara sculptor Eugen Barzu, "Coloana Eroilor" (Heroes' Column), the most recent monument dedicated to the Revolution and its heroes, inaugurated in December 2014, which joins the other 12 monuments in the city.
Permanent exhibitions:
The exhibition "The Cult of Nicolae Ceauşescu's Personality," donated to the Revolution Memorial by the Banat Museum, includes a series of photographs capturing snapshots of Nicolae and Elena Ceaușescu and from the PCR congresses, as well as communist propaganda panels.
"The Revolution in Timișoara from December 15-22, 1989" is an exhibition created by the Revolution Memorial, with photographs from Timișoara.
"The 1989 Revolution in the Cities of the Country" is an exhibition created by the Revolution Memorial, with photographs from Bucharest and other revolutionary cities in Romania, preceded by the events of 1989 in Eastern Europe.
"The Romanian Revolution of December 1989 seen through the eyes of children" is the name of an exhibition of paintings created with the innocence and imagination typical of the age of students from Timișoara at the Children's Palace, under the coordination of artist Maria Bana Jichița.
The exhibition "Solidarity with Romania," created by the Institute of National Remembrance in Warsaw in collaboration with the Polish Institute in Bucharest and donated to the Memorial of the Revolution, presents images captured by a group of Polish journalists in Bucharest and Timișoara between December 1989 and January 1990, during the transport of aid provided by Poland to Romania.
The exhibition "Chronology of the Cold War," created by the International Center for Studies on Communism in Bucharest within the Memorial to the Victims of Communism and the Resistance, with the support of the "Culture 2000" program and donated to the Memorial of the Revolution, covers all stages of the Cold War in the countries where its presence was most strongly felt.
The exhibition "The Berlin Wall – A Border Through Germany," created by the Federal Foundation for the Reappraisal of the SED Dictatorship, captures striking images from the time of the division of Berlin and Germany, accompanied by explanatory texts in German and Romanian translations.
The exhibition "Freed from Fear. Timișoara, December 1989," created by Lucian Ionică, is a series of photographs full of freshness and authenticity, which recreate the atmosphere of the heated days of the Revolution.
The collective exhibition of photographs about the Revolution, "Exhibition at the Exhibition," completes the picture of the crucial event of December 1989.
The exhibition "'89 from the Door" by Timișoara artist Suzana Fântânariu comprises a series of painted doors, with the themes addressed by the author being communism and the Revolution, an invitation to enter, through the eternally open door of art, into a universe of symbols.
The exhibition "The Ceauşescu Era - Naive Painting" by German artist Herma Köpernik-Kennel is a small mirror of the communist period of 1979-1983, which the artist spent in Bucharest. The images, full of subtle irony and humor, are accompanied by texts in the same vein, translated into Romanian.
The exhibition "Punct și de la... carte" (Full Stop and... Book) by graphic artist Traian Abruda includes the covers of books and newsletters published by the Memorial of the Revolution between 2007 and 2015, covers that foreshadow, with the artist's inquisitive aplomb, the themes addressed.
The model room houses the 12 monuments erected in memory of the Heroes of December 1989, as well as a map showing their locations.
The Heroes' Chapel, painted by artist Casian Murărașu, located within the Revolution Memorial and consecrated on January 22, 2014, is intended to illustrate the solidarity of the people of Timișoara throughout the seven days of the Revolution.
Upon request, visitors can watch feature films and documentaries about the Revolution, communism, the monuments of the Revolution, the year 1989, and its global significance.
In addition to exhibitions, the Revolution Memorial offers films about the Revolution and communism, which are subtitled for foreign guests in several languages: English, German, French, Spanish, Italian, Hungarian, and Serbian.
The museum offers an audio guide created during the 2016 Museum Night event, available on mobile devices and on izi.TRAVEL.
The Timișoara Revolution Memorial Association was founded on April 26, 1990, with the aim of honoring the memory of the Heroes of December 1989.
On the initiative of the Revolution Memorial, 12 monuments dedicated to the December 1989 Revolution and its heroes were erected in Timișoara between 1990 and 1999, created by renowned artists from Timișoara and Bucharest.
Since 1995, the Revolution Memorial has housed a Center for Research, Documentation, and Public Information about the December 1989 Revolution.
Also for the purpose of public information, exhibition spaces have been set up at the Revolution Memorial, where Romanian and foreign visitors can see a series of permanent and temporary exhibitions on the theme of the December 1989 Revolution, which is related to other significant events of 1989 that took place in the former communist countries.
