The Memorial of the Revolution in Timișoara undoubtedly belongs to the latter category. This space dedicated to the Romanian Revolution of December 1989 represents a place of memory, reflection and emotion, beyond its role as a tourist attraction. An analysis of the impressions left by visitors highlights the fact that the experience is not the same for everyone. Some leave deeply affected by what they have seen, while others discover aspects of a history they were not sufficiently familiar with.

An interesting aspect, however, is the diversity of the reviews. The Memorial of the Revolution is visited by both Romanians and tourists from Italy, the Netherlands, Japan, Hungary, France, Germany, Spain, the United States, Bosnia, Australia, Canada, Taiwan, China, Japan, Mexico, Peru, and the list goes on. Therefore, their impressions can be viewed as a small snapshot of how the Revolution in Timișoara is perceived beyond the borders of our country. Sometimes, visitors may step into a place steeped in history with personal memories, while at other times, they arrive without any connection to the city's recent history, which can lead to strong reactions and feelings after the visit.

The Memorial – a place of emotions

An obvious characteristic of the reviews is the emotional component. The Memorial is not perceived as a simple space where objects and information are displayed, but as a place that evokes emotional responses. For some, the reaction is closely linked to the visitor's subjectivity and personal memories of the communist period and the Revolution, while for others, the reaction takes the form of amazement and shock as they discover a reality they did not experience.

A Romanian visitor describes how they got “goosebumps”, arguing that those who lived through those painful moments will feel the emotion deeply, while those who did not experience them will feel an “inexplicable shiver”. Another review, also from Romania, speaks about recalling those events and passing them on to future generations: “Am retrăit momentele acelea și mi-am amintit cum a fost. Copilul meu nu înțelegea de ce este libertatea atât de importantă, așa că l-am adus aici, fiind în trecere prin Timișoara. Îți amintești prin toate simțurile, de la văz, la auz până la tactil.” În acest caz, instituția noastră devine totodată un spațiu educativ, ilustrând de ce libertatea este atât de importantă.

Visitors do not speak only about what they have seen, but also about what they have felt. The impact of an exhibition largely depends on its ability to transform carefully documented information into an experience. The photographs, films, testimonies of those involved, of the wounded, of the martyrs’ families, and all the reconstructions of those hellish days contribute to this experience that visitors have.

An Italian visitor describes the Memorial as follows: “A simple yet captivating museum, it authentically recounts the Romanian Revolution of 1989 through films, photographs and testimonies. An intense and meaningful visit, essential for understanding the value of freedom and the history of Timișoara. The staff is friendly and knowledgeable”Through this review, it can be observed that, for him, the visit is associated with freedom, a value that our visitor understood much more deeply thanks to the information presented and the emotionally charged images. Similarly, a German visitor who came to the Memorial describes the place as impressive, created with passion and offering a clear picture of the Revolution: “An impressive museum, created with great passion and from the perspective of eyewitnesses. It offers a very good picture of what the days beginning on December 16, 1989, must have been like.”

Memory, after all, differs depending on one's experiences or, rather, on each person's perception of those experiences. For a Romanian who lived through those moments intensely, seeing those images again triggers a reliving of that period, bringing memories to the surface, especially when the cultural proximity to the event is also taken into account. For a foreign tourist, those very same photographs may symbolize a first “encounter” with a historical reality never encountered before, or one they had only heard about through books and television.

The history of Timișoara known internationally

The presence of various nationalities in the reviews, such as French, Dutch, Italian, Hungarian, German, etc., indicates that the Memorial of the Revolution does not cater exclusively to a local audience, but also to foreign tourists from different cultural backgrounds, all of whom share a curiosity about discovering our recent history.

The 1989 Revolution is essential when discussing Romania's history and the intensity with which it was experienced by Romanians. When it comes to foreign tourists, they cannot feel exactly as deeply what happened, but through relevant additional explanations, combined with documentary images and videos, they remain deeply affected by the events, because they are not only told what happened, but also why such a change was necessary. Through the reviews, it can be said that this mission of conveying the importance of what happened has been accomplished. A Japanese tourist says, in appreciative terms, that it is an excellent place, full of information about life under the communist dictatorship: „Un muzeu excelent. One described it as a place where the course of communism in Romania can be understood: “An interesting museum that presents the rise and fall of communism in Romania.”, while another explains what they liked about the exhibition, using laudatory terms: “An extensive and very interesting museum about the uprisings against the communist regime, which began in Timișoara. Highly recommended, and after your visit, you will be able to explore this impressive city with a richer understanding.” Visitors from Spain and Germany also believe that the information is clearly presented. The former describes the Memorial as a “hidden gem”: „“A hidden gem in the city, especially for those interested in history and politics.”, while the German visitor refers to the picture they can form thanks to the bilingual explanations:„“An impressive place. It offers a very good overview of the December 1989 Revolution and the events that preceded it. Explanations in Romanian and English.”

When it comes to an international audience, language is an important tool. The reviews show that the translation of the original texts into English is appreciated, while the availability of guided tours in languages other than English offers visitors an even better experience. One of them wrote that although not everyone knew Hungarian, 2–3 people did speak it, and, in addition, the documentary they watched had subtitles in their native language: “We were welcomed very warmly. The lady at the ticket office did not speak Hungarian, but a few of her colleagues did. Everyone was polite, and we could ask anyone questions. In English or Hungarian, but we received answers to all our questions. There was also a film screening, which we were able to watch with Hungarian subtitles.”

The different perspectives of Romanian and foreign visitors

One explanation for the diversity of reactions and opinions could be the varying degrees of familiarity with Romania’s history. We can also observe how the perception of a visitor who lived under communism and understands the sacrifices made by the martyrs for today’s freedom differs from that of a visitor who is learning about this regime for the first time.

This difference is evident in the reviews written by Romanian visitors. Some speak about memories, reliving those moments, and the need not to forget. A visitor from Bosnia also states that older people remember those days: ““We, the older generation, remember those days, but it is interesting to look back on past events.”

For a foreign visitor, the Memorial can be a place full of discoveries. For example, a Dutch tourist appreciates it precisely because it helped him acquire a great deal of knowledge: “Very impressive museum. Incredibly friendly staff and guides! They spoke good English, and we learned a lot on our first day in Romania.”

Conveying the intensity of an event such as the 1989 Revolution to someone who does not possess extensive historical knowledge can be a challenge for the Memorial. Through photographs, testimonies from the martyrs’ relatives and eyewitnesses, and reconstructions, the visitor experience comes as close as possible to the reality of those times. A review from the United States speaks precisely about the aspects mentioned above: “Fantastic photographs, a few small but moving reconstructions, interesting works of art, excellent information panels (in English) providing plenty of details. The two women working there also spoke English, which I found very helpful.” Thus, visitors who cross our threshold do not simply look at images, but experience them. The information is not just meant to be read, but also to be fully understood.

The essential role of staff in the visitor experience

One aspect frequently mentioned in reviews is the appreciation of the staff. The role of the staff is very important, especially when it comes to a place dedicated to such a sensitive subject. Visitors who come through our doors describe the staff as “friendly”, “kind”, “knowledgeable” or “passionate”.

A review written by a Romanian woman praises the staff, stating the following: “The museum is truly interesting for understanding Romania’s recent history. The team is wonderful and able to explain the information presented.” A German visitor also appreciated the guided tour in German: “I had the benefit of an excellent guided tour in deutsch.”

The staff of an institution help mediate information. If someone is unfamiliar with or does not fully understand the context, an explanation provided by a guide can help the visitor develop a coherent understanding of it. In this way, the staff do more than welcome visitors; they also help bridge the gap between collective memory and an international audience.

A Place Where the Past Comes to Life

The reviews portray a space that means more than a collection of objects gathered from 1989. It is a place where the bloody past is brought into the present through images, documentaries, testimonies, and the reactions of those who visit it.

There are many reviews praising the Memorial as a place of freedom. One example is a review left by a visitor from Bosnia, who states that Romania can take pride in the courage shown in the fight for democracy: “Today, Romania is fully reaping the rewards of its struggle for freedom and democracy.” Another Romanian visitor thanks the city for freedom: “Powerful emotions and a strong sense of the weight of recent history. Thank you, Timișoara, for freedom!!”

All these perspectives are important because they illustrate how the institution encourages reflection on the present and the concept of “freedom”, while also highlighting the consequences of losing it. In this regard, a French visitor states clearly: “Remember history, or you will be condemned to relive it.”

            Conclusions

An analysis of the reviews shows that the Memorial largely succeeds in making a strong impact on those who walk through its doors. The 1989 Revolution transcends national borders, as reflected in the diversity of visitors’ nationalities. For Romanians, the Memorial can serve as a space for remembrance and for passing on collective memory to younger generations. For foreign visitors, it becomes a gateway to understanding communism, dictatorship, and the struggle for freedom.

The reviews highlight the emotion, authenticity, wealth of materials available to visitors, educational value of the exhibitions, and friendliness of the staff. Visitors speak about discovering a new history or a new perspective. Of course, there are also occasional comments regarding the amount of text or the number of languages available. These observations are also relevant for an institution that seeks to further expand its international reach. However, they are made in the context of an overall appreciation of the Memorial’s historical value.

The value of the Memorial lies in its ability to evoke emotions. Some visitors feel astonishment, while others experience nostalgia. For those who lived through those times, this place represents a journey back in time. For those unfamiliar with such events, it offers a first encounter with a history they have never known. For younger generations, it is an opportunity to understand that the freedom they may take for granted was won by ordinary people who, at a moment when they could no longer bear to live under dictatorship, chose courage over fear.

Thus, the Memorial of the Revolution is a space for dialogue between past and present, between memory and curiosity. The fact that visitors leave with different impressions is a sign that this place fulfils a very important purpose: to encourage visitors to reflect, to understand, and to preserve the history of the 1989 Romanian Revolution in their memory.

Alisa Justinianu Există spații care sunt vizitate, fotografiate și apoi uitate, dar și locuri care rămân în memoria oamenilor mult timp după plecare.
