After World War II, Romania for a long time stood in Western perception under the shadow of the USSR – only crisis moments like in East-Berlin (1953), Hungary (1956) or CSSR (1968) attracted more attention. The more Romania effected an independent foreign policy, it appeared on the Western “screen” in politics, science and media. The positive Western perception survived for a long time also emerging economic problems and growing political oppression in the “golden epoch”.

Each of the state which is presented here can be characterized by specific patterns of perception before and in 1989: in West-Germany the fate of the German minority is in the focus, while the East-German perspective is such of a Socialist “brother-state”. Austria takes care to its international position as a neutral state, and France emphazises its traditional political and cultural relations to the latin brother-nation. These patterns are often shaping scientific publications as well as articles in newspapers and magazines. Trigger points for changing these perceptions are e.g the growing dissent between the Romanian leaders and the Gorbachev policy of Perestroika and Glasnost, the growing escape from Romania, and the beginning rural “systematization”.

The Romanian riots in December 1989 were in German (West and East) perspective overlied by the beginning process of re-unification, while the increasing number of Romanian refugees in Austria – besides an enormous wave of solidarity – stimulated a climate of fear. In France, many Romanian intellectuals (in exile or naturalized) worked as public “interpreters”.

After the Romanian “revolution” of 1989, first the new phenomenon of a “TV revolution” (which it was not really) was a research topic in Western research, later followed by studies on the “communist” regime. The reasons for the economic disaster (and the role of indebtedness to Western institutions) were not be focused.

More and more, the 1989 events at Timişoara, Bucharest and other Romanian places became part of regular commemorative media reports. In Western perspective, the historical moments were replaced by other topics – like governmental crisis, mass protests against corruption or a new “Balkan route” of illegal migration to Central Europe.

The presentation is supported by documents from science and media sources.

About the presentator

Dr. Peter CHROUST

Born 1951 in Vienna (the father’s Czech-Hungarian family rooted in Timişoara/Temesvár).

Political Scientist (since 2016 independent), main research topics: German university history 1918 – 1968; Political, scientific, and cultural perception of Romania in Germany in the 20th and 21st century.

Visits to Romania since 1965. 1980 and 1982 journalist and ethno-musicological research in Maramureş and Vîlcea, 2007 – 2010 presentations at the Romanian Culture Institute (ICR) in Vienna, 2009 presentations in Sibiu and Timişoara (Universitate de Vest). 2018 presentation at the World Congress of Borderland Studies at Budapest (Central European University), 2021 presentation at the Online-Conference of the IICCMER Bucharest.

„Revoluția” română din 1989 – oglindită în mass-media din Germania, Austria și Franța Prelegere la Memorialul Revoluţiei 16-22 Decembrie 1989 din Timişoara, 12 mai 2023 Prelegerea a început cu câteva reflecții asupra percepției politice și științifice a României în Germania (Vest și Est), Austria, Franța înainte de 1989.
